The Sheep Detectives Review: Three grass-green flags full
The Sheep Detectives was one of the best trailer experiences I've ever had. It was transcendent to see a movie about sheep solving a crime: Hugh Jackman's death. I was so hyped the moment I first saw it. So, did this film live up to my giddy hype, or did I completely drop the ball expecting greatness? That's what I, Brighton Nelson of The Reel Ranker, will be discussing in today's review. Thanks so much for joining me here today, and I hope you enjoy the article!

Let's start with the negatives so we can save the best for last. My main negatives focus on the main character. While the performances are great—outside of some questionable English accents—the characters are underutilized, especially regarding the interesting framework of the mystery that was foreshadowed in George's will that deserved more screen time. This is my only major thought coming out of the theater. The interesting reversals of these roles rang hollow because they weren't established well enough.
However, a single disappointment with the mystery isn't going to ruin an entire movie for me. By the end, the positives made this movie one of the best of 2026. First, the cast's superb sheep voice acting is phenomenal, grounded in the gravitas and heartfelt nature of Hugh Jackman as George. The film is high-octane, balancing comedy and emotion and constantly eliciting laughter and tears. It never gets boring because it never lets up.

One of the funniest and most creative ways the film stands out is through the well-researched, brilliantly captured sheep behavior. The film somehow captures the best talking animal action you've ever seen while giving each sheep a superb personality within the forced framework of accurate animal biology.
The film is also beautiful. It has stunning cinematography and atmosphere, making the English countryside feel cinematic and cozy. But it doesn't just look beautiful—its story has a tangible feeling of beauty in the storytelling.
And the emotions here? They're in full gear the whole time. There are multiple tear-jerking scenes here. From heroic sacrifice to slaughterhouse soliloquies to the naming of a Winter Lamb, you will be bawling your eyes out all throughout this beautiful masterwork of a film that is significantly more tender and emotional than the premise would ever suggest.

If you like Charlotte's Web and Knives Out as much as I do, The Sheep Detectives is the film for you. While the mystery could've used a little bit more fine-tuning, everything else about this movie is dialed to eleven. The sheep heart and humor mixed with the wonderful atmosphere create a film that will stand the test of time and be a classic family flick that people of all ages will be grinning and crying over for decades to come.
