Scary Movie (2025) Review: "Crosses every line"... into being mid
For reference, as somebody who didn't grow up in a horror movie (or spoof comedy) household, I've been catching up on these films. Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch the previous films before checking this one out because of scheduling conflicts. As a newbie to the series, did this film work for me and convert me to the fandom, or did it leave me disappointed? That's what I, Brighton Nelson of The Reel Ranker, will be discussing in today's article.
I hate to say it, but this film wasn't great. Like, at all. The Wayans Brothers may have returned, but this film didn't really have the sauce or magic it needed to set itself apart—and I say that as someone who loves the movies this spoofs, and somebody thoroughly satiated by stupid crap like The Starving Games; I know, this can't even surpass that low bar.
I wouldn't say this is an abomination. I still laughed a few times, and the Ghostface reveal was genuinely better than the last two Scream films. There were a couple of jokes that almost crossed the line they were talking about walking, specifically a jarring sequence that deals with male genitalia. However, most of the jokes and bits felt like references, not quite pushing the line into referential humor or spoofing. I didn't find any of the jokes particularly witty, outside of The Substance bit, which was fun. Without a previous reference point with the series, and the fact that there's not much story substance to a film like this, I don't have much more to say: as embarrassing as that is.

The Reel Ranker Verdict
Reel or Unreel? - Unreel
The Reel Ranker Score: 45%
Letter Score: D
Star Ranking: 2.5 out of 5
Scary Movie 6 isn't particularly funny, nor does it have much narrative meat on its bones. It's not offensive—and that's exactly its problem. Nothing crosses the line like it advertises, and without a narrative focus, this film is made or broken by its comedic elements. Here, unfortunately, it falls under the latter.
