All Five Just Add Magic Seasons RANKED!
As a young adult male, I still find Just Add Magic to be one of the most fun and enjoyable shows of all time! This show is a shining example of just how good some streaming service originals can be! This has been one of my favorite shows since 2015 and I've waited way too long for a sixth season that will likely never come. To celebrate the legacy of this fantastic show, I, Brighton Nelson of The Reel Ranker present to you... All Five Just Add Magic Seasons RANKED!
5. Season 5 - C Tier
The Reel Ranker Score: 41%
Whereas Season 4 felt unnecessary, Season 5 (Just Add Magic: Mystery City) felt like the necessary, bold step in the right direction for the series. Unfortunately, while the new trio and setting are fun and do a good job of carrying on the legacy, the overarching narrative and mysteries just can't hold a candle to previous seasons. The new protectors also aren't given a full chance to shine as the few episodes the original trio are in are dominated by them—and those happen to be the best episodes for a reason. Another unfortunate part of this season is that it teases a phenomenal and intriguing idea for a sixth season that may never come and, in retrospect, the input of new protectors led to perfect circumstances for Season 6 to be the best season of this show! Alas, as-is, this season's short runtime, underbaked plot, and unsatisfying finale lead this to be a weaker Just Add Magic season.
4. Season 4 - B Tier
The Reel Ranker Score: 51%
Quite literally, I forgot this season existed until I went to rewatch this show, and, as much as I hate to say this, I wasn't missing much by forgetting about it. This is the most inoffensively mediocre season of a show I've ever watched. There's nothing wrong with it but, ultimately, it just felt like a last minute season meant to bridge the gap between the plotlines of Season 3 and Season 5. This season centers around the suspicious Night Bandit, a mysterious figure attempting to destroy and steal magic spices. By the end of the season, it is revealed that the Night Bandit is Kelly, who believed that, through her actions as the Night Bandit, could keep the book in her hands for longer. However, as inevitably teased near the ned of Season 3, the book needed to be passed on, and that happens at the end of this season. While this season does bring on a few emotions when the book is passed on, this season is the Falcon and the Winter Soldier of Just Add Magic. Like Sam Wilson declining the title of Captain America, Kelly basically neglected to pass the book on, making this a largely unnecessary season that could have been merged with Season 3. Ultimately, I'm happy this season exists, but I'd be indifferent if it suddenly ceased to exist. That's where I am at with this season. Let's move on.
3. Season 1 - S Tier
The Reel Ranker Score: 76%
This pilot season does an impeccable job at cementing this show as one of the most innocently fun shows around. While the narrative of this season is rather weak compared to Seasons 2 and 3, the season has a wonderful ability to incite the wonder of discovering magic and display the deep friendships between the three leads (and foil that with the original protectors and their broken friendship). This season is certainly the most innocent and magic-filled season of them all! However, it isn't perfect. The leads are much more annoying in this season as compared to later seasons and, without the friendship between the OG protectors, a certain comradery is missing. Ultimately, this season is fantastic and, while it isn't my favorite, I'd be down to rewatch it right now if I didn't already have an obscene backlog.
2. Season 3 - S+ Tier
The Reel Ranker Score: 81%
The in-betweeners were an ingenious way to create a new conflict without making the the conflict come out of thin air. Seeing a fourth set of protectors continues to build the lore of the magic in a meaningful way, and this season, in my opinion, has the best overall narrative and plot twists of any of the seasons. This season is close to perfection in many ways, but it still can't compare to the top season on this list.
1. Season 2 - S+ Tier
The Reel Ranker Score: 87%
While the main leads may not get as much development here as Season 1, the mystery isn't as good as Season 3, Season 2 simply does everything right! With Chuck standing out as a phenomenal villain, the OG protectors getting more development, and the best uses of magic in the whole show, and this is easily the most iconic season of the show. When I think Just Add Magic, this is always the first season that comes to my mind. This alone proves it to myself... this is easily my favorite season of Just Add Magic.
