For Worse Review: A comedy style the worlds needs more of

I had no idea what to expect from For Worse, like a lot of new releases... I've recently really enjoyed walking into films without any pitch or preconceived notions. And what I got from this film was a fantastically hilarious rom-com! In a world where many rom-coms have leaned primarily on the romance, it's awesome to see a corny, callback comedy presented with modern-day sensibilities. Today, I, Brighton Nelson of The Reel Ranker, am honored that you are taking time out of your day to read this article, and I hope you enjoy it!

Missi Pyle is the best. I've loved her ever since I saw her as Marv's wife in Home Alone 4. Love that movie, I don't care what anyone else says!

As always, I'll start with the bad and the mixed before moving into the film's best aspects. There are two aspects of the film that left me wanting more. The first is that, throughout the whole film, our main character is chasing one man and realizes he's not the right one. While the majority of this is done with excellence, the ultimate outcome feels quite rushed and unearned. The other unfortunate element is how drawn out the wedding feels at times. While I love some of the drama here, the brisk, pre-wedding comedic pace makes me wish we spent more of the film on the outside, especially with Missi Pyle's character.

Nevertheless, while these elements certainly dampened the film's execution quite a bit, I'm still primarily positive about it! Why? It's overwhelmingly funny and filled to the brim with colorful characters. Amy Landecker is a great performer, and she does a fantastic job portraying an older lady who gets wrapped up in a romance with a young adult. She really does a great job of being the heart of the film in every way!

Nico Hiraga does a great job of playing her opposite throughout the film, and the drama of whether or not they'll get together was very interesting. This film has one of the best casts of supporting characters I've seen in a long time, with each performance as memorable as the last, and all of them really make this film worth watching. Without performances this incredible, this film wouldn't have nearly as much to cling to, but thankfully, that's not the case. However, the best part of this movie is Missi Pyle as our main character's best friend. She's equal parts hilarious, supportive, and memorable. I wish she got a whole lot more screen time because she was the film's greatest asset.

The actor on the left, Bradley Whitford, was great in this film. I didn't like him Reminders of Him, but that's not his fault, I just despised his character haha, and not in a good way.

While For Worse struggles to keep its pacing and has a slightly underwhelming payoff, the film is a testament to the power of comedy and how much a stacked cast can bring a new lease of life into a simple story. The world needs more films like this: simple, fun comedies that are actually funny and do something fresh and exciting.
