All Just Add Magic Characters RANKED!
Just Add Magic has a plethora of iconic characters, with even the minor characters being quite memorable! However, as much as I love some of the characters of this show, some are much better than others and, as I've solemnly sworn to myself as a professional ranker, I must rank all the characters in this fantastic show. Now, without further ado, I, Brighton Nelson of The Reel Ranker present to you... All Just Add Magic Characters RANKED!
F Tier
37. Hailey Parker-Kent
Of all the Just Add Magic characters, Hailey is easily the worst. She's a cruel and unruly older sister to Hannah that shows little to no redeeming qualities. While she may not be as awful of a character as some of the random kids at Rockbury Middle School, she's certainly the worst Just Add Magic character that's actually named and worth mentioning.
D Tier
36. Cody Hamilton
The puny child sidekick of the already-weak antagonist of Just Add Magic: Mystery City, this kid has very little going for him as a character. Outside of following his dad's actions, he doesn't do much, making him an incredibly uninteresting character, especially compared to his sister.
35. Pierce Hamilton
Like Cody, Pierce is a very weak villain. Compared to Mama P, Chuck, Caroline, and even the Night Bandit, Hamilton has almost nothing going for him as a villain. In the end, Pierce is just offensively mediocre and that's that.
C Tier
34. Coach Richards
This guy is just a solid, upstanding basketball coach—that's really all he is. He's nothing particularly special, but he does his job well as a character and I've got no complaints with that!
33. Trudith Winters
This lady is awfully rude, but all of the situations involving her and her books are tons of fun. The magic the trio uses to temporarily become besties with Winters leads to some bizarre scenarios, making her a solid character even though she gets very little time to shine.
32. Clayton Parker-Kent
While Hannah's dad only appears in one episode, he makes a very solid impression, and I'd have loved to see more of him if the plot had allowed it. He's just an all-around good guy and, if he had more limelight, he could live up to the other fantastic dads of the show.
31. Charlotte
As a minor antagonist and bully to the golden trio, Charlotte's role on the show perfectly functions as an introduction to both the magic and to the strength of the trio's bond as friends. She also gets a little bit of redemption in the end, making her a pretty decent character when all is said and done!
30. Jenny O'Brien
Like Hannah's dad, Jenny would have potential to be much higher on this list if she had much more time to develop. However, much more development is given to Amy and Mr. O'Brien, and in terms of Darbie's guardians, Jenny is unfortunately the least interesting of the bunch.
29. Piper
Piper's role on the show is bittersweet, acting as a fourth friend that joins in some of the cooking because she's a good friend of Darbie's. However, my biggest problem with her? This should've been Carmela, in my eyes. It would have been a much more interesting, nuanced, and ultimately, more diverse inclusion to have Carmela stay on the show as Darbie's friend. In the end, Piper is still a solid character, but Piper stands out as a missed opportunity to me.
28. Nick Sellitti
Selliti is an epic guy—I mean, for goodness sake, he owns an Italian restaurant and gets married to Erin Chua, one of my favorite characters on the show. His and Erin's dynamic foils well with the opposite dynamic of the Mystery City protectors, making for good character growth resulting from Nick's inclusion on the show. If it weren't for Nick as a character, I don't know if I'd ever have even liked the new trio, and that's enough for me to consider Nick a good character.
27. The Traveler
I love the actress who plays the Traveler, especially her role in Lost, but she just doesn't get much screen time here. Her enigmatic presence is done incredibly well and she functions very well as a plot device but, overall, The Traveler is not anywhere near a top tier character.
26. Rose Peizer
Rose mostly works better as a character motivation and late-season plot twist than as an actual character, but her role in the story is done perfectly, making for an epic finale to my personal favorite season of the show. Rose is also interesting due to being a protector that comes from decades even before the OCs! While she isn't nearly as interesting as her brother Chuck, she's still a pretty solid character.
25. Lexi Hamilton
Unlike her boring family members, Lexi has a little bit of intrigue going on with her. Since her best friend Ish is one of the show's main characters, Lexi stands as an anti-hero of sorts, making for a more morally gray Just Add Magic character. She's still nothing too special, but she's not too shabby either.
B Tier
24. Carmela
An exchange student who comes from Barcelona and understands very little English, Carmela's one-episode stint on the show was a good one that instantly made her a lovable character. I'd have loved to see Piper scrapped (or tweaked... all five wouldn't hurt) and have a plotline where Darbie genuinely cared about Carmela and tried to learn Spanish on her own. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and I will forever see Carmela as the biggest missed opportunity of Just Add Magic.
23. Willy Thomson
Sure, he might just be an old man the trio encounters once or twice, but Willy Thompson gets a great emotional moment in the episode "Just Add Dogs," as well as time in the spotlight when he tells Hannah about his old friend Chuck. Willy might not be a major character, but I loved every moment we got to see of him. If only Willy got married to Ms. Silvers or something and we got more of him...
Just kidding, Ms. Silvers is too much of a crotchety-old independent lady to need (or want) a guy like Willy. Forget I said anything.
22. RJ White
Starting out as a creepy man looking into Mama P's as an awesome end of Season 2 plot twist, RJ kicks off the plot of my second favorite season of Just Add Magic with a bang. He might be creepy and unimpressive, but he's interesting, and his heart is in the right place. While RJ is the least interesting of the In-Betweeners, he's still a pretty snazzy guy in the end.
21. Nöelle Jasper
As one of the three In-Betweeners and owner of the restaurant Saphrön, Nöelle Jasper is an interesting character that does something unpredictable every time you see her. First, she's nothing more than someone who pisses off Mama P and slow cooks everything but the kitchen sink but then she becomes the suspect of magical war crimes. While her time on the show is rather brief, she steals the show when she's on-screen.
20. Buddy Quinn
Sometimes, Buddy's lovable, funny, and charming. However, Buddy is rude, annoying, and insufferable just as often. Just like many younger brothers, Buddy is a mixed bag at best, and he's easily the most boring and least interesting of the Quinn family. However, Buddy's inclusion to the show leads to a multitude of heartwarming moments, so I can't bash on him too much.
19. Seth Donohue
Yes, I actually included this guy and, yes, he is this high on the list. As Hannah's competition in the fight between robots and music, Seth's appearance on the show is hilarious and memorable! While I completely side with Hannah's argument for music, Seth leads an entertaining argument, making for what I believe to be one of the show's most underrated and underutilized characters.
18. Zoe Walters
Zoe's definitely my least favorite of the new trio because she gets pretty insufferable at times, especially when she pretends to know anything about running cross country, but, in the end, Zoe isn't all too bad. Her mom's way better, though. She'll be much higher on this list.
17. Leo Sellitti
As one of the new protectors in the show's fifth outing, he gets more development than the other previous characters on this list. He starts rather annoying but, as the season progresses, he gets just enough development to be likable. Compared to the iconic main trio, he's pretty boring, but he's still pretty decent in the end.
16. Ish Gupta
As my favorite of the new protectors, Ish is my favorite because she's not involved in all the silly marital drama and, simply put, she's got the most personality of the three. Again, she's more developed than some of the later characters on this list, but she isn't quite the best the show has to offer.
15. Arthur Morris
Starting as a questionably harsh school teacher at Hannah's school, then becoming the main antagonist, and then being an assistant to the girls in finding the true main antagonist, Arthur Morris is an interesting character who never ceases to be epic. As a fourth wheel to the In-Betweeners, Arthur is a much more interesting character than the other fourth-wheel, Piper, and more interesting than two of the In-Betweeners, solidifying him as one of the show's best characters.
14. Amy
Amy is one of my favorite characters in Just Add Magic! She is introduced as a dislikeable girlfriend to Darbie's father, Amy is able to grow into a lovable character. Amy's role in the show allows Darbie to grow into a more mature and likable character! I love the growth Darbie shows when she invites both Amy and her biological mom to things—it's incredibly heartwarming. In the end, Amy is just so kind and awkward, making her a very likable character.
13. Patrick O'Brian
Like Amy, Patrick is just straight up awesome! He's a very great dad to Darbie, and with a good amount of screentime across many episodes, Patrick is a lovable character that gets better and better throughout the show. This is the type of dad a daughter needs—keep up the great work, Patrick. Keep up the great work.
12. Becky Quinn
While she's easily the least interesting of the OCs, Grandma Quinn is still a pretty alright character! If she were less developed, she'd likely be lower on this list, but as a very important character, she gets just enough time to be a great character. Some of her best moments include hanging out with Buddy and getting ice cream, her role as the cursed McGuffin is the first season, and her eventual restoration at the end of Season 1. In the end, Grandma Quinn is a pretty solid character across the board.
A Tier
11. Kelly Quinn
Yes, the main character doesn't even place in my top ten characters. Kelly's biggest problems are her irritating nature, her necessity to be right and get her way, and her constant lack of self-control. However, her flawed nature does allow her to grow into a pretty great character, even though I'm pissed off at what she does a decent portion of the time. Honestly, Kelly kind of reminds me of Harry Potter—she's good, but honestly, why would she be your favorite character?
10. Erin Chua
The best thing to come out of Season 4, Erin and her corporate running of Springtown Coffee is hilarious, relatable, and makes her into a unlikely villain that, quite frankly, is just doing her job. I love how the girls and Jake instantly assume she's a villain for following protocol and making bad coffee, and I also love that she and her daughter are introduced as a way to more fluidly transition into the fifth season, and by the end, she goes from being a villain to being one of my favorite characters or the show. What a legend.
9. Caroline Palmer
As the insanely well-executed twist villain of the show's third season and advisor to Terri Quinn's mayor candidacy under the pseudonym "Jill," Caroline Palmer is a menacing and intriguing villain. While she isn't quite as fantastic as Chuck, as her development was slim due to her being a twist villain, she still got time in the spotlight as a major threat to the main characters. Ultimately, Caroline is a great villain, and her plot twist made her a big part of why Season 3 was such a great season.
8. Terri Quinn
Terri is just such a vibe of a mom! She's sometimes strict, but ultimately, she's just chill, funny, and has a lot of suave screen presence. She gives off MLG gamer and cool aunt vibes, making her such a fun character. Add in her running-for-mayor plot in Season 3 and she quickly becomes one of the best characters in the show.
7. Scott Quinn
Scott is just Terri, but with a major clueless dad complex and barbeque-in-the-backyard vibes. He's just slightly more fun, funny, and questionable—the Quinn couple is just way too good and incredibly underrated in the Just Add Magic fandom.
S Tier
6. Darbie O'Brian
Where Kelly's character flaws made her hard-to-bear, Darbie's flaws made her perhaps the most funny and relatable character on the show. If Kelly were the Gryffindor of the group, Darbie's the Hufflepuff—she's a totally fun and loyal friend that never gets old. And to continue with the analogy, Hannah would be the Ravenclaw and Jake the Slytherin, et cetera. Anyway, let's move into the top 5.
5. Gina Silvers
Mrs. Silvers is so iconic. At first, she seems like the creepy old lady in the haunted house, but she grows into a hardcore, don't-give-two-craps, lovable old piano-teacher grandma that roasts Mama P so hard. Mrs. Silvers is just Becky, but with an actually personality. She's just an incredible character. I wish I could put her higher, but there's still four more characters I like better here.
4. Hannah Parker-Kent
After the first couple episodes, I wholeheartedly expected Darbie to become my favorite character. But that simply wasn't the case. While Darbie and Kelly are great characters, they really feel much more like stereotypes. Hannah, however, feels like a much more layered character, making her feel like the most real and rational character of the show. For that, I truly believe Hannah deserves the fourth place position on this list.
3. Chuck Peizer
From a mysterious figure teased in Season 1 to a reluctant friend to a bombastic lead antagonist, Chuck absolutely steals the screen. Unlike Caroline, a twist villain with generic motives, Chuck is a relatable villain with grounded familial motives—and a solid redemption arc in the final episode! This dude is an equally great villain, hero, and friend, but he isn't quite iconic as the next two characters.
S+ Tier
2. Jake Williams
Jake, simply put, is one of the greatest fictional characters of all-time. He's iconic, always bashing on bad food, running not-so-covert operations for the golden trio, and selling his amazing Jake-ritos across Saffron Falls with his immaculate food bike. Jake also has a great son-like relationship with Mama P, as well as feeling like a true best friend and loyal guy to the three leads. I wish Jake and Hannah would just spawn in my life right now and be my besties, they are just that amazing.
1. Mama P
Mama P is the best anti-hero of all-time and nobody is changing my mind. Everything that ever exits her mouth is instantly comedy gold, endlessly quotable, or worth tatooing on your left forearm. She's one of my favorite characters of all-time, and her unpredictability always makes me crack up like no other character. If you didn't laugh so hard your throat hurt when she was mocking Saphrön, I'm honestly convinced you aren't human.
